Bull Market on the Rise, oil on Strathmore Museum board by Paul Zdepski
The bull was rising higher, and higher in the 1990s, but I knew it couldn't last. The bear knew it too… He’s waiting his turn to ride the carpet like a little Buddha. This piece was wildly popular at the time with prints going everywhere… poor old bull seems to be grounded now. This piece won the Strathmore Paper group's national illustration competition in 1998. I had been working on Strathmore’s 4-ply museum board as my main ground. I love the rigidity and the fact that it’s archival. Then I found out about the contest. They actually asked for the piece to chemically verify that it was on their product. It was, and they sent me a check for $2000 and a nice letter of recognition for winning first place. $2k and I got the piece back… not bad for not really trying. This piece still gets looks when in shows, but I personally believe it's dated until the cycle swings back around. I'll dust it off when we're on the upswing again.
